Then and now – how one of the Mayor’s loyal lieutenants has changed his tune

Democracy Triggered takes you down memory lane.  Look at the 10-year old feature below which appeared in the Newham Recorder in 2006 – it shows  one of the Newham’s Mayor’s loyal lieutenants has certainly changed his tune about the Directly Elected Mayoral model we have in Newham today!

The Labour Cllr was then a Respect Party councillor candidate in Newham, though failed to get elected following the party’s heavy defeat in local elections that year. During that time he believed that Newham residents lived under a ‘dictatorship’ of Robin Wales. But now that Cllr, who is also the Cabinet Member for Crime and Anti-Social Behaviour and Deputy Cabinet Member for Building Communities in the Labour dominated authority, has clearly changed his tune. He clearly also doesn’t think that the fact that Newham’s current Directly Elected Mayor (whose run Newham since 1995!) is a problem for local democracy anymore.
